Our film Edge of Obedience examines the art and life of one of Malaysia’s famous artists, Ahmad Zakii Anwar. He caused controversy in his extremely conservative country when he painted taboo subjects, from figuration to religious symbols to nude images. This may not shock a contemporary Western art world, but such works were less accepted in a Malaysia that increasingly explored Islamism at the turn of the 21st century. Edge of Obedience reveals the compelling backstory to this spiritual painter's iconic nudes series. The film sheds light on how a private quest for spiritual truth, through art, can become embroiled in larger developments in society.
